FIFA and UEFA prolongs Russia’s ban prior to World Cup qualification.
According to reports, FIFA and UEFA, the organizations that oversee football in both Europe and the rest of the world, have announced that Russia will not be permitted to play in the European Championship or the World Cup qualifying tournaments.
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the Russian Football Union (RFU) has been barred from both FIFA and UEFA competitions. As a result of this ruling, neither the women’s nor men’s teams are eligible to compete in the European Championships or the World Cup.
MatchTV, a Russian broadcaster, verified the claim, stating that FIFA and UEFA have agreed to keep Russia out of international events until the 2026 World Cup. They will not be able to participate in the qualifying process as a result of this decision, and one group will have one fewer team.
Russia advanced to the World Cup qualification playoffs in 2022 and were scheduled to play Poland in March. But after Russia’s ban, the match was called off, and the Poles advanced to the next round.
While certain sports permit individual contestants to compete under a neutral flag or, in the case of the Olympics, under the Individual Neutral Athletes (AIN) banner, other sports have imposed similar limits.
