Rema dedicates his MTV VMAs Award to his role models

The MTV Video Music Awards 2023 took place in the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, honoring some of the most famous figures in the Top 40 music world.

Nigerian singer Rema and American pop sensation Selena Gomez won the inaugural award in the Best Afrobeats category for their chart-topping track “Calm Down.”

Gomez, 31, and her 23-year-old counterpart Rema were nominated in numerous categories for their collaborative effort “Calm Down,” including Song of the Year, Best Collaboration, and, of course, Best Afrobeats.

Their song beat off difficult competitors such as Ayra Starr’s “Rush,” Burna Boy’s “It’s Plenty,” Davido featuring Musa Key’s “Unavailable,” Libianca’s “People,” Wizkid featuring Ayra Starr’s “2 Sugar,” and Fireboy DML’s “Bandana,” ultimately winning the title of Best Afrobeats.

Rema thanked everyone who helped him get started in the industry, as well as the genre’s pioneers, in his victory speech.
